Is LED Grow Light Harmful to People’s Eyes?

The light sources of many LED grow lights are mainly composed of red and blue light sources. since these two colors light source are the most sensitive ranges of light waves for plants. The applied blue light wavelength is 450-460nm and 460-470nm.

Blue light is relatively high-energy light with a wavelength between 400nm-480nm. It is widely used in computer monitors, fluorescent lamps, mobile phones, digital products, display screens and led grow lights. the specific hazards of blue light

1) Blue light will aggravate the disease of macular area of retina

With age, lipofuscin (cellular debris) left behind by phagocytosis of retinal pigment epithelial cells gradually accumulates in the layer of retinal pigment epithelial cells, causing the retina to become more sensitive to chronic light exposure injuries. Blue light exacerbates the macular problems associated with genetics, nutrition, the environment, health habits, and aging. The toxicity of the retina will increase with the shortening of the wavelength after a long exposure, thus exacerbating macular disease.

2) cause eye damage after cataract surgery 

With age , the lens of the body itself gradually turns yellow. This can help filter the blue light .however, generally patient will lose this natural barriers after cataract surgery. Retina will be directly touched by blue light, and then the retinal pigment epithelial cells  are damaged, which will seriously affecting the eyes health . it is best for people who with eye problems not to get into the garden room where is full of blue light or blended lighting with more blue light .

When blue light entering eyes and it is focused, the focus is not on the retina but between the retina and the lens. This increases the chromatic aberration distance the light focuses in the eyes. the main reason for the formation of blurred vision is the distance between the true focus and the desired focus(the focus on the retina ). Therefore, the incident blue light will aggravate the color difference and the degree of visual blurring, leading to excessive strain of eye muscles and blood supply for eyes. according to the operating mechanism of the body , the blood supply to the eye should be  strengthened to ease the produced tension. However a highly complicated blood transport will trigger visual fatigue. So blue light in a comprehensive reaction will trigger blurred vision and lead to visual fatigue.

4) Blue light is a kind of light with relatively high energy. Generally, the higher energy photons have a higher chance of scattering when they encounter small particles in the air. This also is why blue light is easier to dazzle.

5) inhibit the secretion of melatonin, disturb sleep, and increase the incidence of major diseases.

Being exposed to blue light for a long time will stimulates the brain, which makes the brain in an excited state and affects the human body clock. Insomnia symptoms such as too long time to fall asleep and multiple awakenings during sleep may occur.

Poor sleep means that all organ systems are prone to dysfunction. People who don't get enough or quality of sleep have significantly reduced immune function, reactivity, memory and coordination, and increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity, indigestion, constipation, and depression.
